Donate Your Fitrana

It is an obligation for every Muslim to give Fitrana before participating in the Eid al-Fitr prayer. Fitrana serves to purify the fasting individual from minor acts of disobedience committed during Ramadan.

What is Fitrana?

Fitrana, also known as Sadaqat al-fitr, involves donating half a sa’ of wheat or a full sa’ of dates, barley, or raisins. In Western countries, where it might not be feasible to provide these specific items to the needy, scholars permit donating the equivalent amount in money.

A hadith from Sahih Bukhari highlights the specific practice of Sadaqat al-Fitr (Fitrana):

Ibn `Umar reported:

“The Prophet (peace be upon him) enjoined the payment of one Sa’ of dates or one Sa’ of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim, young and old, male and female, free and slave.”
(Sahih Bukhari)

This hadith directly refers to Sadaqat al-Fitr, indicating its obligatory nature for every Muslim, regardless of age or social status. The measure of a “Sa’” mentioned in the hadith is an ancient Arabic measure for volume.
