The Benefits and Merits of the Fajr Prayer

Published on Nov 29, 2025

Summary
The Fajr prayer possesses immense benefits: light on the Day of Judgement, Allah's protection, the testimony of the angels, exceptional rewards and spiritual strength. Preserving Fajr transforms the believer's life, strengthens their faith and brings a unique blessing from the very start of the day.

Why is the Fajr prayer unique?

The morning had only just been born.

In the mosque, still wrapped in the silence of dawn, the soft light of Fajr slipped through the stained-glass windows. A few worshippers had remained seated, their faces illuminated by that unique clarity found only at the very start of the day.

The imam, sitting near the mihrab, was gently sliding his prayer beads between his fingers. He looked up at those around him and said in a peaceful voice:

— "Do you know why the Fajr prayer is so precious? Because it is performed when the world is still asleep. It is a moment when Allah grants His light to those who rise solely out of love for Him."

The Fajr prayer is one of the most important, and its benefits are immense — for the heart as well as for the believer's life.

In a corner, the young man — the one who had recently been wondering about the time limit for Fajr — was present. He was listening attentively.

The imam continued:

— "Every prayer has its merits… but Fajr carries a light that nothing can equal. And it is no coincidence that Allah swore by the dawn in His Book."

Then he recited:

(Surah Al-Fajr, verses 1–5)

Then he explained:

— "Allah says:
By the dawn!
And by the ten nights!
By the even and the odd!
And by the night when it passes!
Is there not in that an oath for one endowed with understanding?
"

A worshipper praying in a mosque at Fajr time, with the soft light of dawn illustrating the benefits and spirituality of the Fajr prayer in Islam.

He paused for a moment.

— "When Allah swears by something, it is to show its immense value. And He swore by the dawn… that alone tells us the spiritual importance of this moment. Fajr is not merely a prayer: it is a luminous appointment between the servant and his Lord."

Then he added:

— "And its merits are many. Let me remind you of a few…"

The merits and benefits of the Fajr prayer

A perfect light on the Day of Judgement

The Prophet ﷺ said:
"بَشِّرِ الْمَشَّائِينَ فِي الظُّلَمِ إِلَى الْمَسَاجِدِ بِالنُّورِ التَّامِّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ."

— "Give glad tidings to those who walk to the mosque in the darkness of a complete light on the Day of Judgement."
(Reported by Tirmidhi no. 223 and authenticated by Sheikh Al-Albani)

The imam explained:

This light is not physical: it is the light of faith, which will guide the believer when others are plunged into darkness.

Allah's protection

The Prophet ﷺ said:
"من صلى الصبح فهو في ذمة الله"
— "Whoever prays the Sobh is under Allah's protection."
(Reported by Ibn Maja no. 3946 and authenticated by Sheikh Al-Albani)

The imam explained:

Starting the day with Allah means entering into His peace, His benevolence and His protection.

The testimony of the angels

The imam continued, his gaze serene:

Fajr is a unique moment, for the angels bear witness to you before Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Angels take turns among you, by night and by day.
They meet at the dawn prayer (al-Fajr) and at the afternoon prayer (al-'Asr).
Those who spent the night among you ascend to Allah, who asks them — though He knows better than they:
“In what state did you leave My servants?”
They reply:
“We left them praying, just as we had found them praying.”
"
(Bukhari & Muslim)

The imam turned to the worshippers:

Imagine your name mentioned before Allah… simply because you were praying at Fajr.
It is an honour that few moments can equal.

A prayer "witnessed" by the angels

The imam continued, resting his hand on his prayer beads:

— "Fajr is not merely a prayer. It is a witnessed prayer… a moment when heaven and earth unite in the same testimony."

Allah says:

(Surah Al-Isra', verse 78)

Then the imam recited the verse in its entirety:

( أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَىٰ غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ وَقُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ ۖ إِنَّ قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا )

— "Establish the prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night, and also the recitation at dawn, for indeed the recitation at dawn is witnessed."
(Al-Isra', 78)

Quran recitation at dawn in a mosque – the Fajr prayer witnessed by the angels according to the verse 'Qur’an al-Fajr is attested'.

He then explained:

— "This verse encompasses all the daily prayers: Dhuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib and 'Isha, which run from the decline of the sun to the darkness of the night. Then Allah singles out the Fajr prayer, saying that its recitation is “witnessed”."

He looked up and added:

— "Why is it ‘witnessed’?
Because at Fajr, the angels of the night and the angels of the day take turns. This unique celestial moment makes the Fajr prayer an instant of great spiritual value."

He concluded in a soft voice:

— "At Fajr… you do not pray alone. The angels attend, bear witness and report your name. That is why this prayer illuminates the believer's life."

A gate to Paradise

The imam continued gently:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever prays the two cool prayers shall enter Paradise."
(Authentic – al-Bukhari and Muslim)

He explained:

— "The two ‘cool prayers’ are Fajr and 'Asr. They bear this name because they fall at the two ends of the day, when the air is cool and the light is soft."

Then he added:

— "This hadith means that whoever regularly preserves these two prayers receives a promise: the gate of Paradise.
Why? Because these moments are the most difficult. Fajr comes when sleep is deepest. 'Asr arrives when work, business and worries are at their peak."

He paused and continued:

— "Whoever prays at these times proves that they are not dominated by laziness or by the occupations of this world. It is the sign of a sincere heart that places Allah above its desires. And if someone keeps Fajr and 'Asr, they will very likely preserve all the other prayers."

The imam concluded:

— "Do not understand this hadith as if it were enough to pray only these two prayers — no.
The meaning is that whoever preserves Fajr and 'Asr will be even more diligent in the others, and it is this consistency that leads to Paradise."

Better than the entire world

The imam looked at the worshippers around him, then said:

The Prophet ﷺ attached immense importance to the two units of prayer before Fajr. 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reports:

"The voluntary prayer to which the Prophet ﷺ was most devoted was the two units of Fajr."
(Authentic – al-Bukhari and Muslim)

And she also reports:

"The two units of dawn are better than this world and all that it contains."
(Authentic – Muslim)

The imam explained:

— "This hadith shows the incomparable value of these two raka'at. The Prophet ﷺ performed them with great regularity, more than any other voluntary prayer. And in his words, he teaches us that two simple units, performed before sunrise, are worth more than all the gold, all the power, all the riches of this world."

He added:

— "Why? Because this moment is unique. It is an act of pure sincerity, performed in the tranquillity of dawn, before the world stirs. Allah gives a reward infinitely greater than the effort accomplished."

A sign of sincerity

The imam gently resumed, his gaze resting on the worshippers still present:

— "Rising at dawn, when no one sees you… it is an act of pure sincerity. Only you and Allah. And that is why Fajr reveals the reality of the heart."

Then he recited the hadith:

« أَثْقَلُ الصَّلاةِ على المُنَافِقين: صَلاةُ العِشَاء، وصَلاةُ الفَجر، وَلَو يَعلَمونَ مَا فِيها لَأَتَوهُمَا وَلَو حَبْوُا… »
(al-Bukhari & Muslim)

— "The Prophet ﷺ said:
The heaviest prayers for the hypocrites are those of al-'Isha' and al-Fajr.
And if they knew what reward they contain, they would come to them even crawling!”

Then he added that he had nearly gone, with men carrying bundles of wood, to burn down the houses of those who did not attend the congregational prayer.
(Authentic — Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim)"

The imam explained:

— "Why are these two prayers such a powerful test?
Because they take place in darkness. At that time, the hypocrites did not want to be seen: they came to the visible prayers, but neglected those of dawn and evening, when no one could distinguish them."

He paused, then added:

— "Only the one truly moved by faith rises when sleep is at its sweetest.
Only the one who sincerely hopes for the reward of the Hereafter answers the call of Fajr.
That is why the Prophet ﷺ said they would come crawling if they knew the immense reward that lies within it."

He looked at the worshippers one by one:

— "Fajr is not a simple prayer. It is a proof of love, sincerity and inner strength. Those who preserve it bear witness that their heart is alive."

Conclusion

The imam ended his reminder while watching the morning light enter through the stained-glass windows.

— "Fajr illuminates the believer's life even before it illuminates the sky. Whoever preserves it sees their day transformed, their faith strengthened and their heart at peace. Each dawn is a new chance offered by Allah. Do not let it pass."

He paused briefly, then added:

— "Whoever wishes to draw closer to Allah begins by preserving their prayers… and Fajr is the key to all the others."

The mosque returned to its calm.
The young man, touched by these words, understood that it was not merely a matter of a schedule, but of a spiritual appointment that can change a life.
