How Manukau Islamic Youth Centre Built a Thriving Community Through Service and Innovation
Established in 2021, the Manukau Islamic Youth Centre (MIYC) has flourished into more than just a masjid – it's a thriving community hub serving Auckland's diverse Muslim population. Located in the heart of Papatoetoe at 38 St George Street, this inspiring centre was founded by committed youth and scholars who recognised the growing need for a cosmopolitan space in South Auckland.
A Centre for All: Serving Diverse Needs
With a growing community of over 400 members and weekly attendance exceeding 150 worshippers, MIYC has become a dynamic centre serving youth, new Muslims, and the wider community. The centre's comprehensive approach to community service sets it apart:
- Islamic Education & Spiritual Growth: Dedicated programmes help new Muslims navigate their faith journey, while regular educational lectures and Q&A sessions deepen understanding for all community members.
- Community Integration Support: MIYC provides crucial support helping families settle and connect with the wider community.
- Youth Empowerment: From sports programmes to annual youth camps, MIYC invests in the next generation, creating spaces where young Muslims can grow in faith and character.
- Women's Programmes: Dedicated initiatives empower women through education, fellowship, and skill development.
- Holistic Wellness: A fitness centre reflects MIYC's commitment to physical health as part of overall wellbeing.
The Challenge of Growth
As MIYC's programmes expanded and its community grew, the team faced operational challenges. Manual whiteboards for prayer times required constant updates. Volunteers spent hours each month designing and printing donation boards and event announcements. The question became: How could MIYC maintain its personal touch while serving more people more effectively?
MIYC partnered with Masjidbox to implement digital solutions that would support their mission. The goal was simple: free up volunteers to focus on what matters most – serving people.
Empowering Generosity: $140,000 NZD Raised
MIYC's community has always been generous, but accessibility made all the difference. By offering convenient digital giving options alongside traditional methods, the centre raised $140,000 NZD in 12 months, funds that directly support their educational programmes, youth activities, and community services.

Donation processing is quicker, secure and easier via MasjidBox Donation module via mobile app.
MIYC Community Members
”This financial support enables MIYC to expand its reach, helping more families, supporting more programmes, and strengthening the community's ability to serve.
Building Connection and Supporting Worship
MIYC's rich programme of lectures, youth activities, and community events forms the heart of their mission. By making it easier for community members to stay informed through instant notifications, event attendance more than doubled This isn't just about numbers – it's about families connecting, youth engaging, and knowledge spreading.
Accurate, accessible prayer times help the community maintain their five daily prayers. Digital displays throughout the masjid and synchronized mobile access ensure that whether someone is at the centre or at home, they can easily know prayer times. The automation freed volunteers from hours of manual work each month, allowing them to dedicate more energy to counselling, teaching, and direct community support.
Looking Forward
“
The experience so far has been amazing with how open and accessible our masjid can be with activities happening, how many donations we are collecting, and how our prayer times are tracking and updating our musallees.
MIYC Team
”For MIYC, technology serves a higher purpose: enabling the team to focus on their core mission of spiritual growth, community service, and supporting those in need. True to their community-focused values, they've shared their experience with Masjid At-Taqwa, another Auckland masjid, reflecting the Islamic principle of helping others benefit from what works.
MIYC continues to grow and adapt, with plans to expand their online presence to better showcase their programmes and reach more families. What makes MIYC's story inspiring is the dedication of a team that saw challenges as opportunities to serve their community better. The digital tools helped them do what they do best: build a thriving, connected Muslim community in Auckland.
