What is the Duha Prayer?

The Duha prayer (صلاة الضحى) is a voluntary prayer performed during the mid-morning, after the sun has risen and before it reaches its zenith. It is also known as the prayer of the Awwabin — meaning those who frequently return to Allah in repentance and remembrance.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"My close friend (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) advised me with three: fasting three days of every month, the two Rak'ahs of Duha, and performing Witr before I sleep."
— Authentic — Agreed upon (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) — Sahîh Al-Bukhâri n°1981 — narrated by Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه
It is also called Salat al-Ishraq when performed at the very beginning of its time — right after the sun has fully risen.
Ruling: Confirmed Sunnah — agreed upon by all four Imams (Abu Hanifa, Malik, Al-Shafi'i and Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on them). Leaving it carries no sin, but consistency in performing it is strongly encouraged.
Duha Prayer Time: When Does It Start and End?
The Duha prayer time has two clear boundaries:
- Start: After the sun has risen about a spear's length above the horizon — approximately 15 minutes after sunrise. Praying before this is disliked.
- End: Approximately 10 minutes before the Dhuhr adhan, as the sun approaches its zenith.
This is the position of the Hanafi, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, as well as one of the views of Imam Al-Shafi'i, based on the hadith of 'Amr ibn 'Absah (may Allah be pleased with him), authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih Al-Jami' (3775).
Best Time to Pray Duha
The best time to pray Duha is when the sun has risen high and the heat intensifies — roughly the middle of the period between sunrise and Dhuhr. Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), upon seeing people praying Duha early, said:
"They well know that prayer at another time than this is more excellent, for Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: 'The prayer of those who are penitent is observed when your weaned camels feel the heat of the sun."
— Sahih Muslim 748a — Book 6, Hadith 175 — narrated by Zayd ibn Arqam رضي الله عنه
This means: the best Duha is when the ground heats up from the sun — a sign that the sun is well above the horizon.

All four Imams agree that the minimum is 2 rakats, based on the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih Muslim (721).
Maximum Number of Rakats — Scholarly Difference
View 1 — The Majority (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali): Maximum is 8 rakats, based on what Umm Hani' (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:
"No one told us that the Prophet ﷺ had offered Duha prayer except Umm Hani'. She said that the Prophet ﷺ had taken a bath in her house on the day of the Conquest of Mecca and prayed eight rak'ahs. But no one saw him afterwards praying these rak'ahs."
— Sahih (Al-Albani) — Sunan Abi Dawud 1291 — Book 5, Hadith 42 — narrated by Ibn Abi Layla
View 2 — Ibn Jarir al-Tabari and others: There is no maximum limit, based on the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her):
"The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Duha Prayer as four Rak'ahs and sometimes as much more as Allah willed."
— Authentic — Narrated by Muslim — narrated by 'Â'ishah رضي الله عنها
| Number of Rakats | Ruling |
|---|---|
| 2 rakats | Minimum — agreed by all four Imams |
| 4 rakats | Recommended — established from the Prophet's ﷺ practice |
| 8 rakats | Maximum established from the Prophet's ﷺ action on the Day of Conquest |
| More than 8 | Permissible according to Ibn Jarir al-Tabari and others |
Duha is prayed two by two — performing Taslim after every two rakats, as the Prophet ﷺ said:
"(Voluntary) prayer in both the day and night is performed two by two."
